Demolition work has started to demolish blocks of flats in a North Yorkshire village, paving the way for new properties to be built in their place.

Contractors are demolishing the Fairview Flats, just off the A684 Bedale to Northallerton Road in Leeming Bar.

The two blocks of 12 flats are owned by Broadacres Housing Association, but are no longer deemed fit for purpose.

They are to be replaced by eight homes being built by Broadacres’ private development arm Mulberry Homes Yorkshire.

Mulberry Homes Yorkshire, in partnership with its contractor Lindum York, is transforming a site in the centre of Leeming into an 82-home development, of which 32 have been made available for affordable sale and rent.

Peter Ottowell, Chairman of Mulberry Homes Yorkshire, and Colin Wilkie, Chairman of Broadacres, were present to see the start of demolition work on the flats.

They said: “We are pleased to see the flats, which were no longer fit for purpose, being replaced with new, modern homes built to a very high specification.

“Demolishing these properties will now enable us to complete this integrated housing development by May 2017.

“Providing 82 new homes in the centre of Leeming Bar will have a very positive impact on the village, bringing more people into the community and supporting the local economy.”

People who were living in Fairview Flats have all been re-housed by Broadacres, with several moving into new homes on the development.

Sandra and Nigel Bailey, who were among the first private buyers at Leeming Gate, said: “We lived in Harrogate for 28 years and can honestly say we have spoken to more people since we moved here than in all our time at our previous home.

“There’s a good mix of younger and older people and it has already created such a nice community feeling.”
